Fathers' Rights

Asserting a Father's Rights

Absent active drug or alcohol abuse, or a history of violence or sexual misconduct in the family - fathers have the right to play an active and meaningful role in their children's lives. Today, the laws are more fair and the bias against fathers in the courts is not the problem it used to be. There is, however, a bias that must be guarded against.

As an attorney with more than 13 years of experience serving the family law needs of people in middle Tennessee, I can protect your rights with regard to child custody, visitation, and child support issues. I also represent fathers seeking to modify the terms of custody or support agreements and those facing custodial parent relocation issues as well.

If you have concerns about any of these issues - I encourage you to call or contact me for a consultation.

In a divorce, child custody disputes usually involve disagreements over how much decision-making power each parent will have and how much time each parent will get with their children. I can help you to effectively assert your rights as a father and to develop an individualized parenting plan that serves the best interests of all concerned.

Asserting your rights as an unmarried father often requires a different process. As a lawyer, I can explain your rights, prepare you for what to expect and guide you through this process. In some cases, reaching a solution through negotiation is a realistic possibility. In situations where negotiation fails - paternity testing, juvenile court hearings, and getting your name on the Putative Father Registry maintained by the Tennessee State Department of Children's Services may be necessary.

The next step is talking to an attorney.

I would be happy to speak with you about fathers' rights issues. I offer initial consultations by phone, or in-person at my offices in Franklin, Tennessee (located near the intersection of Murfreesboro Road and Mack Hatcher Boulevard).
